Which Coding Course is Right for My Child?

A guide to choosing the perfect coding course based on your child's age, interests, and goals.

As a coding tutor for the past five years, this is hands down the question I get asked most. And I get it - you want to make sure your child starts with something that clicks for them, not something that feels like homework. Here's how I usually help parents figure it out.

Coding courses for children

Starting with Age

If your child is 8-10 years old, I almost always recommend starting with Scratch. It's visual, it's intuitive, and kids can make games from day one without getting bogged down in syntax. They're learning all the fundamentals - loops, variables, conditions - but it feels like playing with digital Lego.

For ages 11-13, Python tends to be the sweet spot. They're ready for text-based coding, and Python reads almost like English. Plus, it's what actual developers use for everything from web apps to AI, so they're learning something genuinely valuable.

Ages 14+ can jump into JavaScript and Web Development. At this age, they want to build things that look professional. Being able to create a real website they can share with friends? That's the hook.

Following Their Interests

Age is just a starting point though. I've had 9-year-olds absolutely smash Python because they were obsessed with making a text adventure game. And I've had 15-year-olds start with Scratch because they wanted to understand game mechanics first.

Here's my rule of thumb:
  • If they love games and want to make characters move around, start with Scratch.
  • If they're curious about how websites work and want to build their own, go for Web Development.
  • If they're asking "how does this actually work?" about everything, Python's your answer.
  • And if they're into design and making physical things, our 3D Print & Design course lets them create objects they can actually hold.

Not Sure? That's What Taster Sessions Are For

Honestly, the best way to know is to try. Our free taster sessions let your child experience a course firsthand, and I can usually tell within 20 minutes what's going to work best for them.
